It is frustrating to be working hard and long hours and when it comes to that dress or the new pair of trainers you want, you are not able to afford it. Having some money saved, doesn't mean you only have to spend them in emergency times. Trips, events and … anything you want to buy, also require some planning and money saving before hands. Here are some tips that will help you stay focused, and complete the challenge.
1. Organise and plan your steps:
Set a goal, an amount of money you need to save every month for a year. Saving a small amount every day will make a big difference after year. Staying organised it's the first step to achieving a plan. We have created a Money Saving Challenge document for you, as a first step, but it is you that will complete the most important part.
2. Get an empty jar:
Print a picture of the reason you are saving money; a picture of an item you want to buy, a holiday destination, etc. and stick it in front of the jar. Every time you see it will motivate you to put more money in it and in case you are tempted to take some out, you won't.
3. Remind yourself why you do it:
Having a short or long term goal is great, but the goal has to be appealing as well in order for you to stick to the challenge. Even if you save to pay a bill, use a picture or a reminder of what that bill is providing you with. For example, if it's the electricity bill, relate it back to the lights, TV, internet and anything else you might need.
4. Set a time in the day:
Have a standard hour in the day in which you put aside the set amount of money. Make sure you are able to stick to it. For example, if you go to sleep at 11, then 10.30 would be a good time to put the money in the jar. Treat it like a habit, so you don't forget.
5. In case you take money out:
Taking money out will make you feel guilty but it shouldn't distract you from you goal. You should put them back as soon as possible, always having in mind that it is better to put in more than to take out some.
6. Understand what un-motivated you every other time you tried to do the challenge:
Understanding where you went wrong will make you succeed. Reflecting on your acts and evaluating them will stop you from acting the same way again, and but finding new methods, you will be able to stick to the challenge and complete it.
